New Info on Inspections

When we visited the GBRA office eight days ago, there were two items we were especially interested in:

1) The date of the last formal inspection performed on the spillgates

2) The annual maintenance budget for the dam

The short answers arrived, and they are 'repaired in 2012 and possibly not inspected since' and “We're currently working on compiling this information.”

The long answer is this:

“TCEQ inspected the dam in 2018. This inspection however, does not include the spillgates. In 2016, GBRA hired a contractor to perform repairs to locking bars, tie bars, miscellaneous structural steel, and select timbers at 10 of the gates in the Guadalupe Valley Hydroelectric System including the three gates at McQueeney. GBRA performed similar repairs to the three gates at Dunlap in 2012.

"GBRA tries to inspect five spillgates each year. GBRA crews get into the spillgates to drain and remove mud and debris.” Note: There are fifteen spillgates in the system, with 10 still in operation. We rate both the long and short answers "Kinda Inconclusive".

As for Other Local Conditions

The flow on the Guadalupe out of Canyon Dam (not at risk) was reduced just in time for Memorial Day weekend, which has certain locals up in arms while the rest of us enjoy all the money pouring into town. NBU got the San Antonio Street bridge open in time for the weekend, so go ahead and put this one in the “Win” column.

Go Outside - You Don't Get Out Enough

There’s stuff to do! First, head over to Gruene Lake Village every Saturday from 9a to 3p for McNamera’s Farmers Market! It’s both dog and kid friendly, and you can stock up on your hot sauce, baked goods, and gourmet dog treats for the week all while enjoying beautiful Gruene Lake Village!

You know, Gruene Lake Village, where Kora Kora Coffee and the Gruene Door Restaurant are, at the corner of Gruene Lake Dr and World Famous Gruene Rd.

THEN, make plans to head out to Riley’s Tavern on Sunday, June 1, when the Rods at Riley’s classic car exhibition returns to Hunter with The Georges on stage and heapin’ plates o’ BBQ in yo’ mouf.

Get out there. The fresh air'll do you good.
